The Open Short Head and Yard Sheep Dog Trial is another new addition to the Australian Stock Dog Spectacular in 2019 thanks to the enthusiasm of Mike Langdon.
The trial will be held on the cross country course at the AELEC Tamworth, and is expected to draw a lot of interest and add a new dynamic to this already unique and spectacular week of stock dog competitions.
In this particular event the competitor starts his dog from a marked square and heads 3 sheep between 150 and 300 meters away and pulls them to the square. Instead of holding them stationary as in the long head, the competitor and the dog together, then move them along a 20 meter wide driveway, which is marked by a series of pegs; through a pair of hurdles and then along between a second driveway. At this point the competitor goes to the yard, opens the gate and commands his/her dog to yard the sheep. The run is complete when the gate is shut on the sheep, all to the judge's satisfaction and within the designated time of 10 to 15 minutes.
We have planned 2 days of sheep trials with the final 6 dogs competing in the final at the end of the second day.
The event is to be judged by 2 New Zealand triallers, Steve Kerr and Mike Brown. The 2 judges will be holding dog schools during the 2019 ASDS events as well as some short demonstrations.
